Quick questions with Brainstorm Digital16 November, 2006We talked to Eric J. Robertson, VFX Supervisor at Brainstorm Digital, about how cineSpace has changed the way they handle colour calibration at their New York facility. He also offered some comments of his own about his experiences with the tools. What colour calibration/management issues were you facing before adopting cineSpace? Our pipeline relied on subjective analog controls for creating our LUTs and evaluating our color accuracy. How did you solve or work around these issues prior to using cineSpace? We utilized LAD images on a color corrected light box and manually calibrated our monitors. What other alternatives did you consider before choosing cineSpace? Truelight / Filmlight Which components of the cineSpace suite are you using at your facility? cineSpace, equalEyes, cineProfiler, cineSync What other tools do you use (in conjunction with cineSpace) in your workflow? Shake, FrameCycler What benefits have you seen in your colour workflow since adopting cineSpace? We have been able to reduce the number of filmouts required for delivery, as well as being able to provide our LUT to the DI facility to improve our digital delivery. Additionally, we have been able to switch from diffenent labs and DI facilities more easily as our calibrated profiles ease the transition in the color correct stage of our compositing. Any other comments? Every VFX company, Optical house, or Title Design company from 3 to 300 artists should integrate cineSpace into their color workspace. Its ease of use and technical accuracy ensure the precise relationship between monitor and film print for true color fidelity in the Feature Film pipeline. Eric continues: "We've really been enjoying your tools, and have been pitching them to our counterparts ever since we started using them. It's a great, bulletproof system that has eliminated nearly all of the aggrevation of managing a feature film color pipline. It's also well regarded amongst the studios (Universal, Warner Bros., Sony, Focus, Disney) who are concerned about our filmout pipeline, and always vet our technical systems before awarding any work. "Thanks for giving us these tools!" Go back to Customer Stories... |
